To purify water, we have to move it all over the place. We move it from rivers and lakes, from behind dams, we pump it out of the ground, put it through sand beds, through filters, into water towers, and through miles and miles of pipes of all sizes. But moving water isn’t easy…it takes a lot of energy to do it. The energy either comes from the gravitational pull of the earth pulling water downward, or it must be pressurize it to move it upward, long distances in pipes, or through water purifiers! We can pressurize water by:

  • Creating a tall column of water, like behind a dam.
  • Putting water in a high location, like in a water tower (every town has at least one).
  • Squeezing it, like in a piston, water balloon, or in a gas filled tank like soda.
  • Using a motor to spin it fast, like in a water-pump in a car.
Each method requires work. This lab is a direct simulation of the different types of water pressurization methods and a competition to see who can achieve the highest pressurization with the least human energy required.
