Red means Lead (11-12) AP Click the links to the right to view the online Teacher's Guide, Student Logbook, or visit WebQuest unit for this W.E.T. You can also download the Teacher's Guide and Student Logbook in either PDF or Word document format. This W.E.T. is based on the latest research from Dr. Yi Lu and his graduate student Juewen Liu, at the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign, who have developed a seemingly simple test reliably indicating the presence or absence of lead using a solution of catalytic DNA, a cleavable DNA substrate and gold nanoparticles with DNA oligomers. This cutting edge research engages the basic charge of The WaterCAMPWS to improve our ability to detect contaminants and to "remove the drop of poison in an ocean of water." Lead in our water supply from old pipes is an ongoing issue and it disproportionately affects those who live in older and/or higher poverty neighborhoods that cannot afford to costly upgrades. Previous methods of lead detection were slow, taking weeks for return results.
