The problem of recruitment and retention of under-represented groups in STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has confronted and confounded engineering and other STEM programs at universities nationwide. Despite decades of institutional effort, under-represented college students continue to fail to graduate in STEM-related fields, turning instead to careers in life science areas. However, the WaterCAMPWS STEM programs have had noteworthy success. Our demonstrated dedication to an integrated, high-quality experience for all undergraduate students has resulted in a 45% graduation rate among under-represented students at WaterCAMPWS, a rate that is 10% above the norm both nationwide and from the University of Illinois College of Engineering. In FY 2009/2010, 39% of WaterCAMPWS undergraduate students, 25% of graduate students, and 20% of faculty were from under-represented groups.
WaterCAMPWS also participates in direct recruitment activities through complementary programs at UIUC and partner institutions, in partnership with organizations that serve underrepresented groups, and through WaterCAMPWS initiated activities.
